Reach for the Skyyyyy!

Graduates, now that you've graduated, a whole new world of possibilities is open to you!

Possibilities like...

...getting arrested in an old-timey Western.

Oh, c'mon, I can't be the only one who hears Woody from Toy Story saying this, can I?

And that's not the only problem. Nope, it seems that some bakers are having trouble understanding what those white things are called:

And they're not doing so great on the "clouds," either.

Now, you might think that nixing the troublesome "sky" component all together would help:

But then, you also might think that's not how you spell "congratulations" OR "banner," so that just shows what you know. [eye roll]

Thanks to Meg K., Katie K., & Lindsey M., who prefer reaching for the stars.

Especially when they're named Johnny Depp or Nathan Fillion. (Mrowr.)

It's Sinfully Delicious!

Thanks to eagle-eyed Wreckporter JD R., who will play devil's advocate anytime, if it gets her chocolate cake.

Distinctive: Jason YC Wang by WagnerLA

Boldness of Expression is one of the themes photographer David Wagner says permeates his work. It is for this reason I find it so exciting every time I am able to feature his photographs. It is a difficult task for anyone today, especially in the world of photography, to be distinctive but David's work is just that.

There is an energy, bold and sexual yes, but there is also something more. I think the energy stems from the LA in WagnerLA. David's lighting, the feel, even within his studio work seems to draw energy from the California heat. Maybe it David's eye as a designer but I always feel David is mixing modern masculinity with retro Hollywood sensuality, a heat pre air conditioning heat you can can never really escape.

Having been a fan of each others work, model Jason YC Wang, Dr Wang to you, (Jason has his PhD in molecular biology) drove from San Diego to LA to experience the heat. Molecular biology is a branch of biology that deals with the formation, structure, and function of macromolecules essential to life, and especially their role in cell replication and the transmission of genetic information.

With so much science, data and test tubes from nine to five what an incredible contrast to strip off the lab coat at the end of the day and step from behind the microscope lens into the focus of a camera lens.

There is not a lot of expressive creativity in the field of a molecular biology. It is that much more essential then to find a way to assert your creative side when not at work. You can check out more of Jason's bold expressions on ModelMayhem HERE: where you can see his collaborations with many of my favorite artists.

Spring Break!!!

Given today is the last day of spring it is my last chance to say I am going on Spring Break! Those who have been checking FH for awhile know once or twice a year I take short blog breaks. Except for a short trip on Thursday I am not going away, just have a ton of 'real life' things to take care of, some family stuff and some weekend house guests.

Keep checking in daily as I have a few great profiles already ready to go and will still be posting (including coverage of BroadwayBares), just not the amount I usually do. Thanks to those who check in each day, even though blogs seem to be on the decline I am grateful to loyal readers who keep the numbers for FH climbing!

Summer Heat: David Morin by Tom66

With summer beginning officially tomorrow, I could think of no better way to celebrate than this shoot of model David Morin by Thomas from Tom66. Some of you might recognize David as Masculine Mag's model search winner earlier this year. David has an extensive portfolio and impressive modeling credits but although Thomas says David was not a big fan of the blue speedo these beach shots are some of my favorite from his port.

'To get something you have never had, you must be willing to do something you have never done.'
David Morin

David specializes in the healing arts, helping others with lifestyle changes. David's believes the body is a temple and considers it his mission to unlock the human potential in others. If you need a guide, an advisor, motivation or just an ass kicker check out David's site HERE: for more!

Thomas (Tom66) lives and works in Jacksonville, Florida so there is no shortage of locations for beach shoots. Thomas says it is important to him to work and shoot men he likes and respects and his goal is provide them shots that they will love. Thomas says shooting with David was a pleasure and others on the beach seemed to enjoy the experience as well. At one point when David was walking out of the ocean in his speedo towards the camera a woman on the beach pulled out her camera and began to shoot as well. Who can blame her!

GLEE: Spring Awakenings!

As Spring, like the Glee tour come to an end, (it's last couple of weeks are in London and Ireland), the cast will finally get a much deserved, although far too short, vacation. Although this season ended on an upswing I wanted to look back on two of my favorite characters. One I initially disliked and now love. The other began a favorite but is now barely watchable.

I resisted liking Darren Criss when he was introduced earlier in the season. His first episode and rendition of 'Teenage Dream' was an instant hit with fans. I am hit and miss on Katy Perry songs and Ryan Murphy chose to play with fans about who Kurt's new boyfriend would be (he most likely did not know) and I was not sure if Darren would stick around long enough to invest in. By the end of the season Criss' songs were the highlight's of many shows and the actor won me over. I hope the new writing team gives Blaine back the strength he displayed when he first came on the scene. Somehow by the end of the season the character seemed to morph into more of a Kurt twin, losing some of the dynamic qualities he had when first introduced.

Below: Got to love old shots showing up on tumblr

Jonathan Groff is a an amazing actor and singer and his rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody at the end of season one was phenomenal. This season however, Glee brought Groff's Jesse back with little to do, almost nothing to sing and a ruined character even Groff fans struggled to enjoy.

Glee is certainly top heavy with heroes, all the male cast members began as uinique and flawed, but all that singing and dancing has made them all, especially Puck, lose any edge they once had. Making Jesse a villian is not a bad idea, it was just one not very well thought out and not very well written. Creating a love triangle with such an unlikable character really brought nothing to the show. I hope Jesse returns at some point in the future with a decent story and songs worthy of his talent.

Such a beautiful and powerful scene.

Making New Friends

In an effort to get to know you readers a bit better, today I thought we'd have one of you introduce yourselves. You know, foster a little more community and whatnot.

So, take it away, Debbie!

Hello! My name is Debbie, and this is my first attempt at a Cake Wrecks bio. So I'm nervous, but excited at the same time! Wheee!

So, I'm just going to start talking about what I like, and hope you like it!

Um. Let's see. I am... a relatively new Cake Wrecks reader. Um. I love...

...cats.

I love every kind of cat.

I love cats with fur, and cats without fur, and cats in hats, and cats that don't even look like cats...

[sniffle]

I'm sorry. I just...I just really love cats.

[wiping eyes]

And...and I just want to hug all of them because I love them but I can't 'cuz that's crazy I can't hug every cat. BUT I WANT TO. You know? I WANT TO HUG EVERY CAT.

[blowing nose]

Um. Wow. Sorry - I got a little emotional there. Heh.

I also like to...to...

[sob]

I'm sorry; I'm thinking about cats again.

I just...I just LOVE them, and I WANT them. I want them in a basket, and I want them in little bow ties, and I want them to be on a rainbow, and I want a house FULL OF CATS and we would all ROLL AROUND...

[more sobbing]

'Cuz they're all just so CUTE with their little whiskers...

...and their little ears...

...and their little delicious vital organs...

So, yeah. I guess you could say I'm a cat lover.

Um.

And I like to run.

Thanks to Minyassa, David G., Judy E., Briana T., Rachel R., Nancy S., Michelle F., Emily Z., & Stewart C., who are also inspired to run. Far, far away.

Sunday Sweets For My Dad

We all know dads' tastes are just as diverse as, well, non-dads, so when it came time to choose today's Sweets I decided to hone in on one specific dad: mine.

So, here 'tis: Father's Day Sweets for my dad, Jim Yates. But the rest of you can feel free to look, too. :)

Hey, Dad, remember that time the neighbor's little boy snuck in to our house, grabbed your guitar, and dragged it down the sidewalk? Ah, good times.

Also, I don't think your guitar looked quite this cool:

Submitted by Kathy H. and made by her sister, Carol V.

And remember how you'd take me for rides on your motorcycle? The turns always scared me, but I loved having my very own kid-sized helmet, and the thrill of climbing into the seat behind you, hanging on for dear life, and thinking maybe my parents weren't quite so embarrassing, after all.

Although, come to think of it, your motorcycle wasn't this cool, either:

It's possible you've blocked this from memory, but you really did teach me to drive. In our ancient green Toyota pickup, no less, with a floor stick shift.

By CakeDesigns

Our truck was DEFINITELY not this cool.

It took me years to figure out what you did for a living. All I knew was you worked at a big, intimidating office/factory and you wore a suit every day. (Btw, you're, uh, some kind of project manager/engineer type, right?) I still remember the first time you asked me if your tie went with your shirt; it made me feel so important, that you'd ask for my opinion. Actually, I still feel that way, any time you ask.

And for the record: that tie + that shirt = perfect.

Remember when I came home crying because all the kids were making flashy, expensive models for a school project, and I didn't have anything flashy OR expensive? You sat me down and asked me what I'd like to do. Then we went to Skycraft Surplus (remember that?). In the end, I couldn't have been more proud: my project board's little Styrofoam car had real working headlights!

To this day, I clearly remember "The Sociological Impact of the Lightbulb" - because my Dad helped me build it.

Remember Starbuck and Midnight, our pet miniature goats? We must have been the only family in an Orlando subdivision with two goats bleating in the backyard. I still can't believe you bought them for us. Heh.

Submitted by Amelia B. and made by Kick Ass Kakes

(Bet you were expecting a goat cake, huh?)

You were forever doing home projects, and I loved weekends when you'd ask, "Shorty, want to go to the Home o' de Pot?"

By justcakinmytime

We'd pile into our old green pickup, and you'd sing "Greasy Grimey Gopher Guts" and "On Top of Old Smokey" along the way. Thanks to you I still love the smell of sawdust and grease that hits me every time I walk into our local Home Depot - and today I rock my own tool belt.

One night I peeked into the living room to see what you and Mom were laughing about, and there on the TV was a curly-headed man in a long scarf bouncing into a blue police box.

Soon we were all watching together, just like we watched Star Trek and Night Court and Monty Python together. The next year you brought us to my very first convention - a Doctor Who convention.

(I like to think my geeky lineage came full circle when John and I brought you and Mom to Dragon*Con last year - thus starting a yearly tradition, perhaps?)

When we were little, you seemed to take sadistic glee in waking Ben and me with loud jazz music, water, or banging suddenly on our bedroom doors - but I'll never forget the time you woke us with "Who wants to go to Disney World?!"

Sub'd by Stacey R., made by nice icing

You never set limits on my future, Dad. When I wrote lousy poetry, you submitted your favorite to a national magazine - and you were more disappointed than I was when it wasn't printed. When I thought I wanted to be a professional clown, you got brochures for Ringling College. When I first introduced you to John, you asked if we'd set a date yet.

You taught me to pursue my dreams, marry only for love, and to always finish my Brussels sprouts.

Hey, two out of three ain't bad, right?

So thanks, Dad. Happy Father's Day.

(Oh, and see you at Dragon*Con.)

Happy Father's Day to the rest of you dads out there, too! May all your children grow up to make you proud - when they're not publicly embarrassing you on the Internet, of course.

A "Big" Contender

It appears we have a last-minute entry for Father's Day Pictionary!

"Enjoy."

Admit it, Adam L: you see Cthulhu wearing Mickey Mouse ears in a spider cocoon, too.

Grade A: Aaron by Dylan Rossser

Today, when most people want to buy meat...they head to the grocery store. Some of you (whom I have no respect for) actually buy it frozen... in a box, online. Those of us in the know however, understand the only place to really find that perfect grade A cut is to head straight to the butcher. In this case, the butcher is 23 year old Aaron who works with his meat in New Jersey. This week however, he is displaying his wares over at Dylan Rosser's THE MALE FORM! Bon Appetit!

I know....sorry, one pun too many....

Memorable: Brandon R Connelly By T-W-D photos

Doing daily (well almost daily...) features for FH, I am always looking for new topics, new subjects and new artists and models. I am not content to just post good shots or good looking models. The word favorite was put on this blog with thought and intent. I wanted the work, the subjects, to be ones that I really loved, I really respected and found to be memorable.

Since most of my features spotlight photographers and models I am often on Model Mayhem doing research. A couple of weeks ago I was researching a profile when I flipped quickly by model Brandon R Connelly's avatar. Memorable he was, but given I was on a time line for posting, I made a mental note to go back later and check out more of his work. As usual. finding where I saw Brandon's shot did not prove to be easy. After several attempts at retracing my steps, I found myself back to the page where I first saw the shot.

Readers of FH know I love redheads. (Seeing Red) Maybe partly because there was a time it was rare to see them in many portfolios and campaigns. I love Brandon's look, a great body and a face able to express both sexy and soulful. Brandon is new to modeling but has a natural ease and look in front of the camera.

Brandon has just begun modeling, but having only recently turned 20 has not yet committed to a career. Brandon sees his focus possibly leading towards a career as a personal trainer or studying to become a fire fighter. His modeling ambitions are not fame and stardom (although that would be ok), Brandon's goals are more personal and insightful. Never thrilled with having his pictures being taken, Brandon looks to his work as a model to build confidence, feel more photogenic and become more open and comfortable with himself and others.

Some of my favorite photos of Brandon come from Travers Dow from T-W-D photos. Travers captures Brandon's innate masculinity masterfully. Whether it be in a t-shirt, sweater with fashion shots or wearing nothing but a hat or the American Flag, Brandon proves he is winning his battle with confidence as he looks completely comfortable in front of Travers lens.

Travers Dow's field of study was design illustration. Although aspects of the visual artist were incorporated into his learning, Travers says his photography skills were self talk with no formal photography classes or training. Traver's skills come from hard work, determination and as much on the job experience as he can find.

'I have been doing photo shoots for about 2 years now and somehow have managed 123shoots or so - More than 1 per week and on no budget to speak of!'

Being new to the business, it is important to to get his name out there. Travers has become involved with the local Seattle Fashion community where he has found some great models to shoot and gain experience with.

Studio work is currently a big focus for Travers and says Brandon really helped him out with light setups and what style of lighting works best for fashion work and what works for figure work.

'Brandon is a great model - polite and well spoken. I can't believe how young he is with such a fine figure. He is one of the first red-head men I have photographed! True story - a true Irishman - I was at first taken back by his light eyelashes - something which is pretty rare to see. He reads fantastic on camera - and I am looking forward to seeing how he improves and what kinds of images we will create.'
TD

'Travers was awesome to work with and a really amazing photographer. He has a really good way of letting his models know what he wants in a shoot has a very creative mind that makes you feel very comfortable, like your at home or your his best friend. He also really cares about the models he works with. It was a pleasure working with him and meeting him. I really look forward to working with him again.'
